FAQ

Frequently Asked Question

The Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is the total confirmed gross weight of a packed shipping container including cargo net weight and container tare weight. It is not an estimate; it must be accurately measured and reported.

  1. Safety First: This is the primary reason. An incorrectly declared weight was a key factor in the tragic incident. Misdeclared weights risk:
    • Capsizing vessels: Unbalanced loads make ships unstable and prone to sinking.
    • Collapsing container stacks: On the ship, on trucks, and in yards.
    • Worker injuries: During handling and lifting operations.
  2. Legal Compliance (SOLAS): The VGM requirement is mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention. It is not optional.
  3. Prevents Delays and Costs: A container will NOT be loaded onto a vessel without a submitted and verified VGM. Failure to provide it results in:
    • Booking cancellation.
    • Significant demurrage and detention charges while the container is held at the terminal.
    • Costly re-weighing at the port.

At Power Star Freight, we guide you through the simple process of obtaining and submitting your VGM correctly, ensuring your shipment is safe, compliant, and avoids unnecessary fees and delays.

Harmonized System (HS) Code is a standardized international numeric language for classifying traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is used by over 200 countries to identify products for customs, regulatory, and statistical purposes.

Why is getting the correct HS Code so critical?

  1. Determines Customs Duties & Taxes: The HS Code directly dictates the import duty, service tax, and other taxes you will pay. An incorrect code can lead to overpaying or underpaying, which can result in severe penalties.
  2. Ensures Smooth Customs Clearance: Providing the correct HS Code is the foundation of your customs declaration. An inaccurate code will cause delays, inspections, and potential holds at the port ,accruing costly storage, demurrage charges.
  3. Compliance with Regulations: Certain products (e.g., pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electronics) require specific permits, licenses, or are subject to restrictions. The HS Code triggers these regulatory requirements. Misclassification can lead to non-compliance and legal issues.
  4. Trade Policy & Statistics: Governments use HS Code data to monitor controlled goods, negotiate trade agreements, and analyze economic trends.

Cargo insurance is a financial safety net that protects the value of your goods against physical loss or damage while they are in transit, from the moment they leave your warehouse until they are delivered to the final recipient.

It is a specific policy, separate from the basic liability from carrier.

Why is it critically important for EVERY shipment?

  1. Carrier Liability is Extremely Limited:
    • Sea Freight: Carriers' liability is limited by international treaties.
    • Air Freight: Similarly, limit airline liability too.
    • This is not full-value insurance. If your high-value cargoes are lost or damaged, the carrier's compensation will only cover a tiny fraction and it is fully dependent on the investigation, coverage policy.
  2. "Acts of God" and Wider Coverage:

    • Basic carrier liability does not cover many common perils, such as:
      • Natural disasters: Storms, hurricanes, waves washing over deck.
      • Water damage: From rain, humidity, or container leaks.
      • Theft and pilferage: Entire container theft or partial stealing from packages.
      • Accidents during handling: Dropped cargo, forklift damage.
      • Vessel collisions or grounding.
    • Cargo insurance is designed to cover these "all-risk" scenarios.
  3. Financial Security and Business Continuity:
    • A single major loss without insurance can cripple a business, especially for SMEs. Insurance ensures you are financially compensated, allowing you to recover the cost of the goods, replace them for your customer, and protect your profit margin and cash flow.
  4. Professionalism and Trust:
    • Offering or requiring insurance shows your customers that you are a professional partner who cares about protecting their financial interests. It builds immense trust.

In short: Relying on carrier liability is a massive financial risk. Cargo insurance is the only way to ensure the full value of your shipment is protected against the numerous dangers of transit.

At Power Star Freight, we can facilitate arranging comprehensive cargo insurance tailored to your specific shipment's value and route, giving you complete peace of mind.

We work with you to accurately classify your goods, ensuring full compliance, avoiding delays, and optimizing your duty costs. We handle this complexity for you.
